To celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens there are a lot of activities in London until June 2012. Probably you know that Dickens reflected in his stories the social inequality and oppresion of the poor, a theme still reflected nowadays in our society. Here you have some links that will help you to investigate about the life and works of this great writer and begin, for example, with this nice song taken from the musical "Oliver Twist" where Mark Lester plays the part of Oliver. Se cumple el bicentenario de Charles Dickens que nació el 7 de Febrero de 1812 en Portsmouth en una humilde familia cuyos problemas económicos llevaron a la cárcel a su padre por problemas de deudas. Dickens tuvo que empezar a trabajar en distintos empleos, experiencia que reflejaría en su obra donde denuncia el hambre, la miseria y la explotación a la que se sometía a niños y mujeres en plena revolución industrial, lo que supuso el despertar de muchas conciencias y contribuyó a mejorar la situación laboral y social de estos colectivos. Charles Dickens es un clásico de la literatura universal y el más famoso de los escritores ingleses de la época Victoriana.

Yesterday, as David Bowie turned 65, hundreds of supporters urged the elusive star to end his years of sporadic public appearances and reclaim the world stage...but the “chameleon of pop” doesn´t want to end his exile. Born in Brixton,south London, in 1947 and loved for his flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust, Bowie first caught the world’s attention in the late 1960s.His song Space Oddity reached the top five in the UK singles chart in 1969 and by 1972 his hit single Starman, along with the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ensured him poll position in the glam rock era. Despite his vast international success, Bowie has not released an album since Reality in 2003.In 2004 during a performance at the Hurricane Festival in Germany, he suffered severe chest pains due to a blocked artery which required surgery. The remainder of the tour was cancelled as a result and he has now not played live since 2006. I still remember the tour´s set, a giant spider and when the show started Bowie was lowered from the roof to the stage floor while seated in a chair and for the first encore – the song Time- he appeared on the top of the spider´s head.

THE MASCOTS.

Wenlock and Mandeville are the mascots created by iris, a London creative agency. Wenlock has five friendship bracelets on his wrist-each bracelet has the color of an Olympic ring- and the three points on his head represent the three places of the podium. The shape on his face represents the Olympic stadium roof and the logo of the games on his body means that everybody is going to London in 2012. The name comes from the town of Much Wenlock, which held a forerunner of the current Olympic Games.
The name of Mandeville comes from Stoke Mandeville Hospital, a facility in Buckinghamshire that initially organised the Stoke Mandeville Games, the precursor of the Paralympic Games. His head is like a helmet and there are three points blue, red and green that represent the Paralympic Symbol.

Andy Capp is another character in the Daily Mirror who appeared first in 1957 from the pencils of Reg Smythe. Andy is lazy, he likes drinking and stealing money from his wife Flo. Long time ago there were princesses of royal blood whose marriages were ruled by dinastic and expansive interests where there was nothing to do with love...but the real truth is that there aren´t royal princesses in Europe and royal families had to have a look at the" plebs". Of course it´s not Disney style where a poor but beautiful young girl is fit to be a princess...No! In these times in spite of being a plebeian at least she has to have a university degree and the family has to belong to the middle class.And we could say the same about princes... Atrás quedaron esas princesas de sangre real cuyos matrimonios estaban regidos por intereses dinásticos y expansivos en los que nada tenía que ver el amor...pero lo cierto es que no hay princesas reales en Europa y las casas reales han tenido que tirar de la plebe. Por supuesto no al estilo Disney donde una joven pobre pero bella vale para ser princesa ...no! Aunque sea plebeya al menos debe tener un título universitario y provenir como mínimo de una familia de clase media.

We are watching this summer this new television series, and it´s a good chance to have a look at the most famous King of England, Henry VIII. The BBC/Showtime co-production is not new, it was broadcasted in 2007, and Jonathan_Rhys-Meyers starred on it and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama in 2007 for the role. Perhaps you Know him because he is the face of Hugo Boss' newest fragrance, HUGO Element. Meyers hasn´t had an easy life: he has problems with his alcohol addiction and has been arrested twice. Actualmente estamos viendo una serie de televisión británica, "Los Tudor", centrada en la turbulenta fase histórica del reinado de Enrique VIII. This month has come very hot for everybody and in class is almost impossible to be concentrated: we are in our final exams and students from Bachillerato face their most important test: the PAAU! If you want more information about facts during June visit the post Junio.But meanwhile let me tell you that I got a dream last Friday in Rock in Rio Madrid: I was lucky to attend Bon Jovi performance and it was incredible,funny and with an excellent sound...but there were more artists: Mago de Oz, Macaco, Pereza...If you have the chance tell your parents that you are ready to go to a big concert...the organization was brilliant: it was worthseeing!And thanks to RTVE because now it´s possible to enjoy all the songs in youtube. Origins of the word:
May is named after the Greek goddess, Maia. The month is the time when flowers emerge and crops begin to sprout. The Anglo-Saxon name for May was Tri-Milchi, in recognition of the fact that with the lush new grass cows could be milked three times a day. It was first called May in about 1430. Before then it was called Maius, Mayes, or Mai. In some parts of Britain, May 1st is called Garland Day.
May Day Superstition:
First thing in the morning on May 1st, young girls used to rush out into the garden to wash their faces in the May dew.Why? There is an old tale that says that May dew has magic properties and that anyone who has washed their face in it will have a beautiful complexion all through the year. This dew was supposed to be able to remove freckles and also spots and pimples.
Oak Apple Day:
This is the day that traditionally people wear oak apples or oak leaves pinned to them to remember that on May 29th King Charles ll returned triumphantly to London after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
The reason for the wearing of oak apples or oak leaves was to celebrate the King's narrow escape from capture by Cromwell's soldiers by hiding in an oak tree.
Other Superstitions for May:
The month of may was considered an unlucky month particularly for getting married.
'Marry in May and you'll rue the day'
Cats born this month will not be good rodent catchers and even worse, will bring snakes into the home. And about Anniversaries? Labour day is celebrated on the first day of May and this is an event that takes place in many countries.The penny black stamp (the world´s first postage stamp)became valid for use in the UK. Florence Nightingale, a famous nurse, was born and King Arthur died in this month in the year of 542. Well, now you know a little more about May.

Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn't remember. Now the live action is being merged with CG animation and motion-capture creatures, and then transferred into 3-D. By the way! The Legend of the Snowdrop

The flower called snowdrop appears in February and is a symbol of hope. According to legend, the snowdrop became the symbol of hope when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. When Eve was about to give up hope that the cold winters would never end, an angel appeared. She transformed some of the snowflakes into snowdrop flowers, proving that the winters do eventually give way to the spring.

Festivals and Traditions: Among them there are some interesting as St Luke's Little Summer, at the centre of a spell of particularly fine weather; English Pudding Season where pudding started or Punky night which falls on the last Thursday in October and is a Somerset tradition: Some time in the Middle Ages, all the men of Hinto St George went off to a fair. When they failed to return that evening, the women went looking for them by the light of punkies. You should know that Punky is another name for a pumpkin which has been hollowed out and has a candle standing inside it. Traditionally on this night, children in the South of England would carve their ‘Punkies’, (pumpkins) into Jack O'Lanterns. Once carved the children would go out in groups and march through the streets, singing traditional ‘punky’ songs, calling in at friendly houses and competing for best lantern with rival groups they meet. The streets would be lit with the light of the Punkies.
Nowadays, on Punky Night in Hinton St George, Somerset, local children join a procession through the village streets, swinging their homemade lanterns and going

29 September. St. Michael is the patron saint of the sea and maritime lands, of ships and boatmen, of horses and horsemen. He was the Angel who hurled Lucifer (the devil) down from Heaven for his treachery.Michaelmas Day is traditionally the last day of the harvest season. A Great custom in England was to dine on goose on Michaelmas. One reason for this was said to be that Queen Elizabeth I was eating goose when news of the defeat of the Armada was brought to her. In celebration she said that henceforth she would always eat goose on Michaelmas Day. Others then followed her lead.
Anniversaries:
The Great Fire of London raged for four days - destroying more than 13,000 houses and almost 100 churches - including St Paul's Cathedral. A total of 6 people are killed.William the Conqueror died and Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming.

En el calendario romano era el séptimo mes pero los anglo-sajones lo llamaron el mes de la cebada porque es cuando ésta se recolectaba. Septiembre se relacionaba con los terremotos, incendios... pues estaba regido por el dios romano Vulcano. Respecto a sus tradiciones, Septiembre era el mes de la recolecciòn, de los mares debido a su patrón, el arcángel San Miguel y es costumbre cenar ganso debido a que la reina Isabel I se encontraba cenando ganso cuando le comunicaron la derrota de la Armada Invencible española. The Spanish Inquisition was an ecclesiastical tribunal started in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. It maintained Catholicism in their kingdoms, and replaced the medieval inquisition which was under papal control. It was under the direct control of the Spanish monarchy and was definitively abolished in 1834, during the reign of Isabella II.The Inquisition, as an ecclesiastical tribunal, had jurisdiction only over baptized Christians, some of who also practised other forms of faith and at the time were considered heretics according to the Catholic Church. This method was similar to Witchcraft,the use of certain kinds of supernatural or magical powers in order to inflict harm or damage upon members of a community. In Early Modern European tradition, witches have stereotypically, though not exclusively, been women. As Christianity became the dominant religion in Europe, its concern with magic lessened.Pendle Witches trials of 1612 are among the most famous witch trials in English history, nine women and two men were charged with the murders of ten people by the use of witchcraft.
The most famous witchcraft incident In the British North America were the witch trials that took place in Salem, Massachusetts. Over 150 people were arrested and imprisoned.

It´s twenty years this week since 96

Liverpool fans lost their lives at Hillsborough in Sheffield. In 1989 thousands of football fans went to watch their teams, Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest, playing a cup semi final. Fans were searched for alcohol and weapons in order to avoid hooligans so there was soon a mass of people trying to get into the ground. Moreover, police opened the gates and caused a human stampede: the cause of the disaster was failure of police control.Ninety-six Liverpool fans never returned home. World football remembers the worst disaster in British football history and every year on 15 April thousands of people remember the dead with floral tributes outside the Anfield stadium gates.
But football hooligans have often humiliated their own players: in 1980 England and Belgium played the European championship in Turin and violence began when Belgium scored an equalizing goal to make the score 1-1. Hooligans then shamed England.

- Para formar la tercera persona del singular del presente simple, se añade -s al verbo: play....plays / want....wants.
- Los verbos acabados en -s, -x, -sh, -ch, forman la tercera persona del singular del presente simple añadiendo -es al verbo: kiss....kisses / fix....fixes.
- Los verbos go y do también forman la tercera persona del singular añadiendo -es al verbo: go....goes / do....does.
- Las palabras terminadas en consonante + -y, cambian la -y por -i y se añade -es: carry....carries / marry....marries.

PRESENTE CONTINUO:REGLAS ORTOGRÁFICAS PARA FORMAR EL GERUNDIO -ing (GERUND -ing).

Beowulf is the longest and greatest surviving Anglo-saxon poem. The setting of the epic is the sixth century in what is now known as Denmark and southwest Sweden. Beowulf, a young warrior in Geatland (southwestern Sweden) comes with fourteen warriors to help Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, to fight against a huge man-like ogre named Grendel, (a descendant of the biblical murderer Cain), who has menaced the King for twelve years.

Beowulf es un príncipe escandinavo que presta ayuda al rey de los daneses, Hrothgar, contra un monstruo marino que solía penetrar en el recinto real y secuestrar a nobles al llegar la noche. Beowulf y sus catorce guerreros triunfarán sobre el monstruo y más tarde vencerá también a su madre en un combate submarino de varios días. Al regresar a Suecia es proclamado rey de los geatas y gobernará sabiamente. En su ancianidad un dragón, guardián de un tesoro, descubre que le han robado en su guarida y saldrá a devastar el país de los geatas. Beowulf quedará herido de muerte en el combate y doce caballeros le levantan un monumento junto al mar y mientras se consume la pira cantan las hazañas de su rey cabalgando alrededor de ésta.

Aunque la mujer no aparece en el poema sino como simple espectadora de las victorias del varón, tal vez quieras ver a Angelina Jolie visitando la página oficial de la PELI.

This video from Gnarls Barkley,"Crazy", is based on the Rorschach inkblot test, a method of psychological evaluation used to try to examine the personality characteristics and emotional functioning of patients. There are ten official inkblots: five are black ink on white paper, two are black and red ink on white paper and three are multicolored.

Este vídeo está basado en el test de Rorschach, método de evaluación psicológica que se utilizaba para intentar averiguar la personalidad y las emociones de los pacientes. Hay diez láminas de las cuales cinco son de tinta negra sobre papel blanco, dos son de tinta roja y negra y tres utilizan varios colores.
